As an ever-expanding Research Group we are always seeking to work with brilliant researchers from across the word. Some ideas for independent funding are summarised below, but new opportunities rise continuously. Therefore, potential PhD students, Postdoctoral Researchers and visiting scientists are highly encouraged to contact Dr Gobbo to discuss possibilities and research proposals.
Visiting students and researchers:
Visitors from Canada: The Mitacs-UKRI scheme is providing opportunities for
undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows to join research group at a UK University for a period of 12–24 weeks. Please see Globalink Research Award and Accelerate International.
Visitors from China: If you are interested to visit the Gobbo Group for up to one year, please contact Dr Gobbo in July for a September submission, and January for an April submission.
Masters by Research (M.Res) candidates:
If you are interested in joining the Gobbo Group as M.Res student, and keen to gain experience and do a one-year Masters’ research project, please contact Dr Gobbo at any time.
EU/UK students: Please contact Dr Gobbo if you have obtained a first-class M.Sci (or equivalent) degree, or are expecting to graduate before the start of the academic year in October each year to discuss available funding opportunities. Please provide a CV and two letters of reference.
Commonwealth PhD Scholarships: Commonwealth PhD Scholarships are for candidates from states in the Commonwealth, for full-time doctoral study at a UK university. Applications are normally due in mid-November. Please contact Dr Gobbo in September to plan your application. More information is available here.
Chinese Students: The UoB has launched a new scholarship scheme in collaboration with the China Scholarship Council. The number of available scholarships will increase by 20 every year (2019 intake – 60; 2020 intake – 80; and 2021 intake 100). The call is usually published in mid-October with deadlines for submission in early January. Please contact Dr Gobbo with a CV and two letters of reference.
Applying for funds – at any time:
If you are interested in joining the Gobbo Group by applying to a local government scheme in your Country, please contact Dr Gobbo well in advance of the deadline with details of your intended application, your CV and two reference letters.
Royal Society Newton International Fellowship:
This scheme is for non-UK scientists from most countries who are:
1) at an early stage of their research career (<7 years after obtaining their PhD);
2) not currently in the UK, and who wish to conduct research in the UK.
Calls usually open in February every year, with deadlines usually around mid-March. Please contact Dr Gobboin December through February if you are interested to apply. Please see here for more information.
Marie Curie Fellowship:
Deadline is usually in October. Please contact Dr Gobbo at the beginning of the summer to enquire about the possibility to be hosted as a Marie Curie Fellow and develop a research proposal. Dr Gobbo is a former Marie Curie Fellow and will advise you on how to write a successful application. Please see here for more information.
Please note that you are not allowed to have spent more than 1 year in the last 3 years (before the application deadline) in the UK to be able to apply.
NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship:
This Fellowship Fellowships is for Canadian Citizens and permanent resident of Canada and provides salary for 2 years of research. Application deadline is in October, therefore please contact Dr Gobbo in May-June to develop a research proposal. Please see here for more information.
Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship:
The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships is for Canadian Citizens and permanent resident of Canada program provides 2-year funding to the very best postdoctoral Canadian applicants, who will positively contribute to Canada’s economic, social and research-based growth. Application deadline is in September, therefore please contact Dr Gobbo in May-June to develop a research proposal. Please see here for more information.
EMBO Postdoctoral Fellowships:
The EMBO Postdoctoral Fellowships are awarded for a period of up to two years and support excellent postdoctoral researchers in laboratories throughout Europe and the world. International exchange is a key requirement. Please see here for more information.
